There are now 36 species of Canids in the World! A recent study by Koepfli et al. published in Current Biology (http://www.cell.com/current-biology/abstract/S0960-9822(15)00787-3) shows that African and Eurasian golden jackals are genetically distinct lineages. The consequence is that the African golden jackal should now be recognized as a distinct species.
